Layers of Intention

In the context of sacred plants used for healing and spiritual growth, intention refers to the personal purpose or mindset a person brings to a ceremony or healing experience. Setting a clear intention is considered crucial to guiding the experience and facilitating transformation on a deeper, more meaningful level. It helps the individual articulate what they seek. Many plant medicine traditions, especially those involving shamanic or indigenous practices, emphasize the idea that plants are conscious and intelligent beings. Setting a clear intention is seen as a way to align with the spirit of the plant, inviting its guidance and wisdom into the experience. The spirit of the plant responds to the seeker’s openness and sincerity. During the making of Hapé, those involved enter a trance like state, working with the plant spirits to infuse as much positive intention as possible. All plant spirits are chosen consciously and considered with the utmost respect. By the time the Hapé is complete, layers of positive intention have been infused. When one is called to work with this sacred remedy, we must do it justice with our own sincerity.

The Soplada

The Soplada is the blowing of Sacred Remedies with channeled intention, using vital life force: In a typical soplada, the healer (often a shaman or curandero) blows sacred plants in different forms, such as tabaco smoke, floral cleansing water (like agua florida), or herbs, over the patient’s body. This is done to clear negative energy, offer protection, and promote healing. The main purpose of a soplada is energetic cleansing or limpieza—it is believed to dispel bad spirits, harmful energies, or emotional blockages from the body, mind, and spirit, as well as invoking the positive. It helps connect the healer with the spirit world, allowing them to channel positive energy and blessings. This type of healing is often to prepare for larger healing work, such as plant medicine ceremonies. The soplada is typically performed by gently blowing over specific parts of the body—sometimes focusing on areas where negative energy is thought to accumulate, such as the head, heart, or hands. The process can also include blowing over medicinal objects or tools that are then applied to the person receiving the healing In many indigenous traditions, Tabaco (mapacho), a powerful plant medicine, is considered sacred and is often used in the Soplada for its protective and purifying qualities. The Soplada is especially important when working with Hapé. Since Hapé is carried by the breath into deeper parts of the being, absolute consciousness must be used. First, the healer must connect to a pure intention, focus all of their being and blow with a gentle force, direct from their energy centre.
