The Soplada

➼ What is a Soplada?

A Soplada is the blowing of sacred remedies with clear, channeled intention, using one’s vital life force. In a typical soplada, a healer—often a shaman or curandero—blows sacred plant medicines such as tabaco smoke, floral waters (like agua florida), or herbs over the body of the person receiving the healing.

This ancient practice is used to clear negative energies, offer protection, and promote healing on multiple levels.

➼ Purpose of the Soplada

At its core, the soplada is a ritual of energetic cleansing, or limpieza. It is believed to:

Dispel negative spirits and harmful energies

Release emotional blockages

Restore harmony to the mind, body, and spirit

Invite in positive energies and spiritual blessings

➼ Mapacho and the Soplada

In many indigenous traditions, Mapacho is revered as a sacred and powerful plant medicine. It is commonly used in the soplada for its protective, cleansing, and grounding qualities.

When working with Rapé, the soplada becomes especially important. Because Rapé is carried by the breath deep into the energetic body, the one administering it must do so with absolute consciousness.

The healer must:

Connect deeply to a pure intention

Focus their entire being

Blow with a gentle yet focused force,

This ensures the medicine is delivered with integrity, respect, and in alignment with its sacred purpose.

Layers of Intention

➼ The Power of Intention

In the realm of sacred plant medicine, intention is the personal purpose or mindset that one brings into a ceremony or healing experience. Setting a clear intention is considered essential—it guides the experience, deepens the process, and supports meaningful transformation. Intention allows the individual to clarify what they seek and why they are stepping into this space.

➼ A Living Relationship with the Plants

In many shamanic and indigenous traditions, it is believed that plants are conscious, intelligent beings. By setting a clear and heartfelt intention, we align ourselves with the spirit of the plant—inviting its guidance, wisdom, and support.

The plant responds not just to our words, but to our openness, sincerity, and respect.

➼ Infusing Rapé with Intention

During the creation of Rapé, the process is approached with deep reverence. Those involved often enter a trance-like state, working directly with the plant spirits to infuse the blend with positive intention. Every element is chosen consciously, every step taken with care.

By the time the Rapé is complete, it carries with it layers of sacred intention—infused with respect, focus, and purpose.

➼ Honouring the Medicine

When one feels called to work with this sacred remedy, it is important that we meet it with the same level of sincerity and presence. The more we bring our own clear intention into the experience, the more we are able to truly honour the medicine—and receive its teachings.
